As far as instant messaging applications go, Yahoo! Messenger is a very good piece of software. Among its long list of features and functions (check out a Yahoo! Messenger review here) there is one that not many users are aware of – the option to share Twitter updates via Yahoo!'s instant messaging application. When you update you’re your account on the popular micro-blogging site Twitter, that update will be shared with your Yahoo! Messenger contacts as well.

To start sharing your Twitter updates with all or some of your Yahoo! Messenger contacts, follow the steps presented below:

Step 1. On your profile page, access Share More.

Step 2. You should see a list there -> click Twitter. If you do not see Twitter in the list, there’s a simple explanation: you’re already sharing Twitter updates with Yahoo! Messenger contacts.

Step 3. Type in your Twitter username.

Step 4. Go to the Manage My Updates page

Step 5. In the list, find Twitter -> select one of 3 options from the dropdown menu. These 3 options are:

Option 1. Anyone – you will share your Twitter updates with all the people in your Yahoo! Messenger contacts list.
Option 2. My Connections – you will share your Twitter updates with the people you are connected to via Yahoo! Profiles only.
Option 3. No one – you will not share your Twitter updates with any Yahoo! Messenger.

Tips and warnings
As of September 2009 Yahoo! has dropped support for Yahoo! Messenger versions 6.0 through 7.0. You could switch to using the online alternatives, but in keeping with the desktop experience you are well advised to upgrade to Yahoo! Messenger 9. A detailed tutorial on how to install Yahoo! Messenger 9 is available here.
