Imagine this scenario if you will: you are talking with one of your friends via Yahoo! Messenger, telling him how funny this PowerPoint presentation you got from your neighbor Bob is. Your friend wants to see it to, so what do you do? You can send the file to him via Yahoo! Messenger. Sending files is one of the features included in Yahoo!’s instant messaging application.

Here’s how you can send files with Yahoo! Messenger

The Drag and Drop Method

Step 1. Locate the files you want to send to your friend.

Step 2. Select the files -> drag and drop them onto the conversation window. Alternatively you can drag and drop the files directly onto your friend’s name in the contacts list.

The Keyboard Shortcuts Method

Step 1. With Yahoo! Messenger selected press Alt -> press A -> then press F.

Step 2. In the Send a File window that appeared use the arrow keys to select the contact you want to send the file to -> then press Enter.

Step 3. The Select the file to send window will appear. Use the arrow keys and Enter to select the file you want to transfer.

The In the IM Window Method – The Long version

Step 1. In the IM window click Actions

Step 2. In the dropdown menu select Send a File

Step 3. Locate the file you want to transfer and click Open.

The In the IM Window Method – The Short Version

Step 1. In the IM window click the paperclip icon from the bottom right hand corner (check the image below)

Step 2. Locate the file you want to transfer and click Open.



Tips and warnings
  • It may be necessary to disable your firewall before you can send files via Yahoo! Messenger.
  • You cannot send files to Windows Live Messenger contacts for example. You can only send files to contacts from the Yahoo! network (other Yahoo! Messenger users).
