Remove the Y! Updates Popup in Yahoo! Messenger 10

At the time of writing this, the latest version of the Yahoo! developed instant messaging application for Windows users is Yahoo! Messenger 10. It comes with several new bits and pieces compared to Yahoo! Messenger 9. Like for example Y! Updates, an alternative contacts list view that displays a stream of updates (in real-time).

To put it simply, if you click Y! Updates you will see a list of contacts that updated their status, linked to a certain webpage, said something on Twitter, and so on. The annoying thing is that each time Y! Updates lists a new item, you will see a popup in the bottom right hand corner of the window. This could be annoying if one of your contacts keeps updating his status every two seconds.

Luckily enough there is something you can do. You can set it so that Yahoo! Messenger does not display popups when someone updates their status. Here is what you have to do.

Step 1. First of all you’ll need to launch Yahoo! Messenger and sign into your account.

Step 2. From the list of menus at the top, click Messenger.

Step 3. Now click Yahoo! Updates under Category.

Step 4. Click the Customize Yahoo! Updates button.

Step 5. Uncheck the box next to Show Alert. No matter on what Yahoo! site someone does something new, you will not get a popup.
To only remove the popup for when someone updates his Yahoo! Messenger status, leave that box checked. Uncheck the box next to Yahoo! Messenger. You will still get popups, but not when someone does something new on Yahoo! Messenger.

Step 6. Click OK to close the Yahoo! Updates window.

Step 7. Click OK to close the Yahoo! Messenger Preferences window.

Tips and warnings
  • You can still see what you’re friends are up to by clicking the Y! Updates window. Just that when a new item will be added to Y! Updates, you won’t see a popup in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
  • If you are still using Yahoo! Messenger 9 and would like to upgrade to Yahoo! Messenger 10, take a look at this tutorial.
  • For iPhone users there’s also Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone.
