You can easily access a lot of Windows’ functionality by simply right clicking an empty space on the desktop (see here, here, here, here to name but a few). With the latest version of the Windows-based operating system, mainly Windows 7, Microsoft has enhanced this functionality. Now when you right click an empty space on the desktop, you will notice two additions to the Context Menu that pops up: Gadgets and Screen Resolution. While some of you may welcome these new options in the Context Menu, other may not see it this way.
For those of you that want to get rid of the Gadgets and Screen Resolution options from the right click Context Menu, here is a step by step guide on how to do so:
Step 1. Through the start menu or run box, open the Registry Editor (type in regedit.exe in the run box).
Step 2. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDesktopBackgroundShell
Step 3. Normally a registry hack would be enough, but not in this case. The Gadgets and Screen Resolution options from the right click Context Menu are protected by special permissions – which will become obvious when you locate the registry key from Step 2 and notice that you can’t remove or rename any of the three items there. You need to gain permission to modify the registry keys so right click the DesktopBackground key -> select Permissions.
Step 4. The Permissions for Desktop Background window should have appeared -> click Advanced (bottom right hand corner).
Step 5. Locate and click the Owner tab.
Step 6. Click Administrators -> check the box next to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects -> click Apply.
Step 7. In the Permissions for Desktop Background window locate and click the Permissions tab -> select Administrators -> check the box next to Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object -> click Apply.
Step 8. When a prompt asking you if you want to proceed pops up, confirm your actions by clicking Yes.
Step 9. Delete the Gadgets and Screen Resolution keys from
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDesktopBackgroundShell
The Screen Resolution key is called Display.

Adding a new string named "Extended" (without quotes)will leave the option in the menu but will only be shown when holding shift while right clicking the desktop. This leaves all the options available while keeping the usual menu clean.
