You certainly do not want to let people with malicious intent compromise your Gmail account. For that reason you should pick a properly strong password that is made up of letters, numbers and symbols. Then you’re going to want to keep that password safe and protected – just follow these guidelines.

A strong password cannot be cracked that easily. A strong password also means you’ll have trouble remembering it. It’s human nature to forget things. Just ask my girlfriend; I can never remember when her birthday is. The inevitable will happen and you’ll forget your Gmail password. Without a password, you cannot access your Gmail account – and that’s where you have all your important email messages. You don’t have to sweat it out. You can easily recover your forgotten password.

Step 1. Since you’re reading this, you already have a web browser up and running, so head over to Google’s password recovery page.

Step 2. After you click the above link, a new tab will open. In the Username section type in your Gmail username and click Submit.

Step 3. Type in the letters you see in the distorted image (CAPTCHA) and click Submit.

Step 4. You will be informed that certain instructions have been sent to your alternative email account (mine is ****@yahoo.com)

Step 5. Access your alternative email account and view the message Google sent you. It contains a link -> click it.

Step 6. You will be directed to the Reset Password page. Type in your new password and confirm it by re-typing it.

Step 7. Click Reset Password.

Tips and warnings
  • Some of you may not have an alternative email account, or may have ignored it for such a long time that it has been disabled. Here is what Google advises you to do in this situation: “If you don't have an alternative email address or if you no longer have access to that account, please try to reset your password again after 24 hours. At that point, you'll be able to reset your password by answering the security question that you provided when you created your account. We use the security question for account recovery only after an account has been idle for 24 hours. We do this to prevent someone else from taking over your account.”
  • Now if you forget the answer to the security question just like you forgot your password, the only thing you can do is complete this form.
  • If you just want to change your Gmail password, follow the instructions presented here.

Dear Google team, I found the lack of direct contact with you managers appalling, not in line with the quality of your products. I've lost my PW to reach my account (dihedron@gmail.com) and up today I'm unable to login. I understand the security issue but it seems on your side no is sensitive so see the user frustration. code0651
