Receive Files in Yahoo! Messenger
With Yahoo!’s IM (instant messaging) application, Yahoo! Messenger, you can do many things – see here. You can even send files from your computer to one of your friends – a topic that we’ve covered here. Sending files is great, but it will not do you any good if you do not know how to receive them. It is nothing too complicated, just check out the detailed step-by-step tutorial presented below.
Step 1. You cannot receive files from Yahoo! Messenger contacts if you are logged out. So launch the IM application and log in.
Step 2. Contact the person who wants to send you a file. Tell him that you are online and waiting for him to initiate the transfer.
Step 3. A message will appear in the IM window when that contact initiated the transfer. The message is: USERNAME is sending you 1 file. Click Save As.

Step 4. The Save File As window will appear. Select the location where you would like to store the file -> then click Save.
Step 5. When the transfer is complete and the file has been stored onto your computer, the message You have received 1 file from USERNAME will appear. You can open the file you just received from within the IM window by clicking Open.

Tips and warnings
- Files can be sent only within the Yahoo! network. You cannot send files to Windows Live Messenger contacts for example.
- If you receive more than 1 file, they will all be stored in the same location (see step 4)
- Clicking Open will access the file you just received (see step 5). If you received several files, click Open and then select the specific file you want to access.
- Do not accept transfers from untrusted sources. The file may be a virus or some form of malware. Only accept files from contacts you trust.
