One of the guidelines we’ve highlighted in the How To Keep Your Computer Safe and Protected article is this one: always keep your operating system up-to-date. Every second Tuesday of the month, Microsoft releases patches and fixes for its products. Make sure you get these patches/fixes.

With that in mind, it seems like it should be easier to access Windows Update in Windows 7. You could for example pin Windows update to the taskbar. Here is what you have to do:

Step 1. Click the Start button from the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Alternatively just press the Windows key on your keyboard (it has the Microsoft logo on it).

Step 2. Go to All Programs -> locate Windows Update.

Step 3. Right click Windows Update -> drag and drop Windows Update to the desktop (don’t let go of that right mouse button).

Step 4. Let go of the right mouse button -> a menu will appear -> select Create shortcuts here. A Windows Update shortcut will be created on the desktop.

Step 5. Right click the Windows Update desktop shortcut you just created. At the bottom of the menu that appears, click Properties.

Step 6. The Windows Update properties window will open -> click the Shortcut tab -> copy the following info into the Target box: cmd /c wuapp.exe

Step 7. Click Apply -> click OK.

Step 8. Drag the Windows Update shortcut from the desktop onto the taskbar and pin it.

Tips and warnings
  • The command window will briefly open when you launch Windows Update. If you do not want to see this window, when you get to step 6 -> select Minimized from the Run section.
  • You can pin Windows Update to the Start Menu as well. Just drag and drop the Windows Update shortcut from the desktop onto the Start Menu.
  • About Windows Update: It is a service provided by Redmond-based software giant Microsoft free of charge to all its customers. The service delivers the latest updates for the Windows operating system, Internet Explorer web browser, and other Microsoft products.
