Minimize Winamp to the System Tray

Now that you know how to install the Nullsoft developed Winamp media player on your computer, I would like to present to you a useful little trick: how to minimize Winamp to the system tray instead of the taskbar. A tab corresponding to each open window is displayed in the taskbar and since I regularly have quite a few windows open at the same time, the taskbar is cluttered enough, there’s no need for a Winamp tab to be present there. After all, I just want Winamp to run in the background and play some music without bothering me.

You say you do not have Winamp installed on your machine and you don’t know how to install the software? My bad. A detailed tutorial on how to install Winamp is available here.

Here is what you have to do to get Winamp to minimize to the system tray instead of the taskbar:

Step 1. The first step, obviously is to launch the media player. In this regard you can double click the desktop icon, click the link in the Start Menu, or the shortcut in the Quick Launch.

Step 2. Right click the main Winamp window -> in the dropdown menu that appears go to Options -> click Preferences. I should mention that I use the Classic Winamp skin. If you use the Modern Winamp skin then click the Options tab -> in the dropdown menu that appears select Preferences.

Step 3. Click General Preferences in the list to the left. To the right you will see all sorts of options and check boxes. Look down, you will see a slider. Next to it there’s a piece of text that says Show Winamp in: Below it there are two options: Taskbar and System Tray. Uncheck the box next to taskbar and check the box next to system tray.

Step 4. Click Close and you’re done. The next time you click the minimize button, Winamp will hide away in the system tray instead of the taskbar.

Tips and warnings
You can replace step 2 with this simple keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + P.
You can replace the system tray icon for Winamp by moving the slider from left to right (see step 4).
