If you have purchased a new PC and a version of the latest Windows-based operating system, mainly Windows 7, you can easily transfer programs, settings, files and folders from your old XP-powered computer to your brand new Windows 7-powered PC. You can do this with Windows Easy Transfer and a USB stick, or you can do it with Windows Easy transfer over a local network. My old Windows XP-powered PC is so battered for example that the none of the USB ports work anymore – but the local network works just fine, so I can easily transfer data from XP to Windows 7.
Here is how you can use Windows Easy Transfer to move data from XP to Windows 7 over the network.
Step 1. On the new Windows 7 PC click Start -> Getting Started -> Transfer your files
Step 2. The welcome screen will appear -> click through until you get to What do you want to use to transfer items to your new computer? Click A network..
Step 3. Click This is my new computer.
Step 4. You will be asked if you want to install Windows Easy Transfer on your old XP-powered PC. Click I need to install it now.
Step 5. You will have to choose the device that will be used to install Windows Easy Transfer on the old PC. Select a network or external drive. Windows XP, unlike Vista, does not come with Windows Easy Transfer preinstalled. The goal here is to install Windows Easy Transfer on the XP machine. You could of course download Windows Easy Transfer from Microsoft and install it on your XP-powered computer, but in some cases the downloaded version is not compatible with the Windows Easy Transfer version on the Windows 7 PC.
Step 6. Go to the old computer, find the location where you saved Windows Easy Transfer and double click the Windows Easy Transfer shortcut. A wizard will guide you through the steps. The goal here is to get a transfer key.
Step 7. Wait while Windows Easy Transfer prepares to run. A progress bar will indicate how much more time you have to wait.
Step 8. Enter the Windows Easy Transfer key from your old XP computer into the new Windows 7 computer. Click Next.
Step 9. Windows Easy Transfer will scan the old PC’s user accounts and will display a list of items that will be moved. If you want to select individual files and folders click Advanced -> select the files and folders you world like to be moved -> click Save when you’re done.
Step 10. Wait for the transfer to complete.
Step 11. When the transfer is complete you can see a detailed report of what was transferred, what wasn’t, and what programs are or aren’t compatible with Windows 7.
Step 12. Click Restart to complete the process.
