Today, the 22nf of October ‘09 is the day when the Microsoft-developed operating system Windows 7 reaches GA (General Availability) status. This means you can go out and buy a version of the operating system from pretty much every IT-oriented store out there.
If you have already purchased a version of Windows 7 and a new PC, you will want to move data from your old, XP-powered PC to the new Windows 7 PC. You can do this with Easy Transfer and a USB drive.
Here is what you have to do:
Step 1. On the new Windows 7 PC click Start -> Getting Started -> Transfer your files
Step 2. The welcome screen will appear -> click through until you get to What do you want to use to transfer items to your new computer? Click An external hard disk or USB flash drive.
Step 3. Click This is my new computer.
Step 4. You will now be asked the following question: Has Windows Easy Transfer already saved your files from your old computer to an external hard disk or USB flash drive?. Click No.
Step 5. You will be asked if you want to install Windows Easy Transfer on your old XP-powered PC. Click I need to install it now. Make sure the USB flash drive is connected to the PC (the new one).
Step 6. You will have to choose the device that will be used to install Windows Easy Transfer on the old PC. Select USB flash drive. Wait for Windows Easy Transfer to be copied.
Step 7. Take the USB flash drive out and connect it to the old computer. On the old computer, browse to where you saved Windows Easy Transfer and double click the Windows Easy Transfer shortcut. A wizard will guide you -> when you have a Windows EAsy Transfer key click Next.
Step 8. Wait while Windows Easy Transfer prepares to run. A progress bar will indicate how much more time you have to wait.
Step 9. You are presented with the Windows Easy Transfer welcome screen. Click through until you get to What do you want to use to transfer items to your new computer? -> click An external hard disk or USB flash drive.
Step 10. Windows Easy Transfer will scan the old PC’s user accounts and will display a list of items that will be moved. If you want to select individual files and folders click Advanced -> select the files and folders you world like to be moved -> click Save when you’re done.
Step 11. If you want to, you can protect the data you want to move with a password. Type in the password -> retype the password for confirmation -> click Save.
Step 12. Take the USB flash drive and plug it into the new Windows 7 PC. Launch Windows Easy Transfer -> when you get to Has Windows Easy Transfer already saved your files from your old computer to an external hard disk or USB flash drive click Yes. Windows Explorer will open and will display the location of the backup on the USB flash drive
Step 13. You can now restore the files you copied from your old XP computer – all of them. Or you can restore specific files and folders. Select the option that suits your needs -> save the option -> begin the transfer.
Step 14. Wait for the transfer to complete.
Step 15. When the transfer is complete click See what was transferred to see what was moved and what wasn’t.
