Mark Threads as Unread from Here in Gmail
People that subscribe to a lot of active mailing lists (and don’t have all that much free time on their hands) will attest to the fact that until they get to read an email it already has a ton or replies. When they do have some free time, they will undoubtedly start to read these threads. But what if they do not get to read all the threads? They could mark the thread as read, but then every item in the thread will be marked as read, even the bits they didn’t get to read.
There is a simple solution for all you Gmail users there. You could use the Mark Unread from Here option. This option is not available by default in Gmail, but with a few clicks of the mouse you could turn it on. Here is what you have to do:
Step 1. Go to Gmail (click here – a new tab will open), enter your login credentials and click Sign in.
Step 2. Look to the top right corner of the screen, locate and click the Settings link.
Step 3. In the Settings window click the Labs tab (the second to last tab to the right).
Step 4. Find a Labs experiment called Mark Unread from Here. You can easily do so by pressing Ctrl + F -> then type in Mark Unread from Here. When you’ve found it, click Enable.
Step 5. You must now save the changes you’ve made in Gmail so click the Save Changes button from the top of the list of the Save Changes button at the bottom.
Step 6. Now open a thread you haven’t read yet. Read a few items. From the dropdown menu in the upper right-hand corner, click the Mark unread from here option.

Tips and warnings
- Going through steps 1, 2 and 3 is unnecessary if you are already logged into your Google account. In this case you need only click this link and you will be directed to the Labs experiments.
- Gmail Labs is the place where Google software engineers post applications they feel will make Gmail a better email client. If these Labs experiments prove to be popular and very useful, they will eventually graduate out of Labs and become a core component of Gmail – like Offline Gmail did recently.
