Manually Update Add-ons in Firefox
By default, the Mozilla developed Firefox browser automatically verifies if there are any updates available for your installed add-ons. Since this default behavior can be annoying at times (the browser won’t load until you confirm the fact that you want to update the add-on or the fact that you want to ignore the update), we’ve showed you how to disable it in a previous article (see here). Disabling any automatic features means that you have to do things yourself from that point on.
Here is what you have to do to manually update add-ons in Firefox:
Step 1. The first and obvious step to take is to launch the software application. Double click the Firefox icon on the desktop, click the Firefox icon in the Quick Launch menu, or whatever other means you use to fire up Firefox.
Step 2. A list of menus is displayed in the top left hand side of the window. Click the one that says Tools.
Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click Options. A window entitled Options will pop up.
Step 4. Click the Main tab -> down at the bottom of the window, in the Add-ons section click Manage Add-ons…
Step 5. In the Add-ons window that appears click Find Updates. Let the process run its course. Apply any updates if updates are found (just click Install Updates, let the process run its course and click Restart Firefox when the update process is complete -> then click Restart when asked to confirm your actions).
Tips and warnings
I've taken the long road in the tutorial above. You could replace steps 2,3 and 4 by clicking Tools -> Add-ons.
Pretty much every time n add-on is updated you will have to restart the browser.
If you no longer want to use a specific add-on, you could disable it. If you do not want it on your system altogether, you can remove it. A detailed tutorial on how to disable/uninstall add-ons in Firefox is available here.
