The purpose of System Restore in Windows 7, and previous Windows versions, is to let the user undo harmful changes to the system. You are very well advised to use this feature and create a System Restore point when you install new software applications on your system, for example. If the unexpected were to happen, you can easily restore your system.

The purpose of this article is not to teach you how to create a System Restore point or how to disable System Restore in Windows 7. We will focus on how to manage the amount of disk space System Restore uses.

Here is what you have to do to increase/decrease the amount of disk space used by System Restore.

Step 1. Minimize all open windows and running applications. Even better, close all open windows and shut down all running applications. Right click My Computer -> from the dropdown menu select Properties.

Step 2. In the menu that appears, click the System protection link.

Step 3. The System Properties window should have popped up. Locate and click the System Protection tab.

Step 4. In the Protection Settings section select a disk. For the purposes of this tutorial, we will select C:

Step 5. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, next to Configure restore settings, manage disk space, and delete restore points, there’s a Configure button. Click it.

Step 5. The System Protection for Local Disk (C:) window will popup (again, we used C: to better explain the process). In the Disk Space Usage section there’s a slider. Move it to the left to decrease the amount of space allocated to System Restore. Move the slider to the right to increase the amount of space System Restore uses.

Step 6. When you’ve made a selection your happy with, click Apply -> then click OK and you’re done.

Tips and warnings
  • Don’t get stingy with the amount of space System Restore uses. After all, it is a feature that will come in handy if for some reason your computer stops working properly.
