The Start Menu is one area in which the Windows 7 is very much similar to Windows XP and Windows Vista. Windows XP displayed the recently accessed files, Windows Vista displayed the recently accessed files and programs, and Windows 7 as well displays the most recently accessed files and programs. Some Windows users do not like this default behavior; they would much rather Windows would not remember what files and what programs were recently accessed.
Luckily enough, getting to change this default behavior in Windows 7 is a straightforward process. Just follow the details presented below and you should be just fine:
Step 1. Right click the Taskbar and select Properties.
Alternatively you can click Start -> right click an empty space in the Start Menu -> click Properties.
Step 2. Click the Start Menu tab from the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window that appears.
Step 3. Under Privacy, uncheck the box next to Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu. Also uncheck the box next to Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar.
Step 4. Click Apply -> click OK and you’re done.

- This is almost as easy as rearranging buttons on the Windows 7 Taskbar (a topic that we’ve covered here).
- Vista users that want to manage their Start Menu privacy controls please click here.
- To undo this change simply re-check the boxes next to Store and display a list of recently opened files and Store and display a list of recently opened programs.
- If you miss the Run command (and since you’re already playing with the Start Menu settings), you can set it up so that the Run command is once again displayed in the Start Menu. Just click Customize -> check the Run Command box -> click OK.
