Yahoo!’s instant messaging application, the aptly named Yahoo! Messenger, comes with several archiving options – which is to say it stores the messages you send out to your contacts as well as the messages your contacts send you. With a few mouse clicks you can easily manage the way Yahoo! Messenger stores these messages. It’s nothing too hard, just follow the detailed step-by-step tutorial presented below and you should do just fine:

Step 1. Launch the Yahoo! Messenger application and log into your account.

Step 2. At the top of the window there’s a list of menus. Click Messenger (the first menu to the left).

Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click Preferences.

Step 4. In the Yahoo! Messenger Preferences window that just popped up click Archive.

Step 5. You are presented with 3 options:

Yes, save all of my messages – all of your messages will be saved.
Yes, save all of my messages, but clear them each time I sign out – the messages from your current session will be saved. When you end your session by signing out, they will be erased.
No, do not save any of my messages – none of your messages will be saved (great for the privacy concerned user out there).

Select the option that suits your needs.

Step 6. Click Apply -> click OK and you’re done.

Tips and warnings
For those of you that would rather use the keyboard than the mouse, here’s a handy keyboard shortcut that you can use to replace step 3: Ctrl + Shift + P.
For the keyboard shortcut fan, here’s one other handy shortcut: F3. If you press F3 in the IM window you will access the Show Recent Messages feature.
You can access the entire messages archive by clicking Contacts -> Message Archive.
There are certain 3rd party software applications out there that can read archived messages. They just decode the archive and present it to the user.
As of September 2009 Yahoo! has pulled support for Yahoo! Messenger versions 6.0 through 7.5. If you are still using these outdated versions, you should upgrade now. You can install Yahoo! Messenger 9 for example- here’s how.
