Remember the time you spent half a day formatting, partitioning and installing a fresh copy of the Windows-based operating system on your computer? It took a long time, but then you had everything just the way you wanted and the OS never ran better – you only had to wait a short time from the time you hit the power button until Windows booted up and was ready to go. Fond memories indeed, because as time moves on and files become fragmented, as you install and uninstall more and more software apps, the operating system starts to get sluggish and the boot time increases more and more. In some instances the boot time is so lengthy that it leads to law suits – just check out this article and see for yourself.
Here are a few simple steps that you can employ to get your computer to boot faster.
Step 1. The simple truth of the matter is that as you install more and more programs, most if not all of them will load during startup. The direct consequence is that the Windows OS will take forever to load. There are a few software apps that you can get (free of charge of course) and use to specify which apps will be loaded during startup and which will be delayed. A comprehensive article on this subject is available here.
Step 2. Uninstall unnecessary apps. This will free up HDD disk space as well. If you do not want to uninstall apps you rarely if ever use, at least make sure Windows does not automatically load them when it boots up.
Step 3. Make sure your system has not been compromised. Get a properly good security software solution and run a scan. Slow boot times can sometimes be caused by malware – the OS loads Trojans or adware on startup, causing the boot process to take a long time.
Step 4. Run Disk Cleanup (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup) and defragment your computer at least once a month.
Step 5. Make sure you have at least 20-30% of free disk space on your Windows-dedicated partition (usually C:). Move any unnecessary files to another partition, or if the situation calls for it, repartition your HDD. You should have ensured that the partition where you have the OS and software apps installed is large enough to accommodate them all.
Tips and warnings
If you have a CD/DVD in your CD or DVD-ROM drive, every time you boot up your computer the operating system will waste time reading it and trying yo determine whether it is a bootable disk or not.
Do not remove applications that you are not familiar with. Remove only those software programs that you do not need.
If you do not want to pay for security software, you need not part with your hard earned cash. There are plenty of free security software solutions out there and most of them are just as good as paid software.
