Make Yahoo! Messenger Minimize to the System Tray

Yahoo! Messenger is one of the most popular instant messaging (IM) clients out there, and for good reason. It looks very nice and it comes with tons of functionality – which will become more than obvious after you download and install the software on your computer. But the topic of Yahoo! Messenger’s functionality is not the main focus of this article; instead we will focus on how to minimize the IM client to the system tray.

When you click the Minimize button, Yahoo! Messenger will neatly fold away in the Task Bar. That’s the default behavior the development team decided to fit the IM client with. There are two ways to bypass it: you can click the close button instead of Minimize (the app will not be shut down), or you can follow the instructions presented below.

Step 1. Use your Yahoo! ID to log into Yahoo! Messenger.

Step 2. In the upper left hand corner of the Yahoo! Messenger window click Messenger.

Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click Preferences. You can skip all this clicking by using this keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + P.

Step 4: In Category select General.

Step 5. In the When I’m using Yahoo! Messenger section check the box next to Remove the taskbar button when I minimize the main window.

Step 6. Click Apply and then click OK. The next time you minimize Yahoo! Messenger, the Taskbar button will no longer appear. You can double click the Yahoo! Messenger icon in the System Tray to access the IM app.

Tips and warnings

If you do not know how to install Yahoo! Messenger 9 on your Windows-powered computer, a detailed tutorial is available here.
If you do not want to install Yahoo! Messenger on your computer, there are other ways to access the IM app’s functionality. I am talking about several web based alternatives. The first alternative is to use Yahoo! Messenger for the Web , which does not require you to download and install anything, it just requires you to keep a browser windows open. The second alternative is to sign into your Yahoo! Mail account and use the built-in IM feature. The third alternative referst to the fact that Yahoo! Messenger is an integral part of the brand new Yahoo! homepage.
