Make Yahoo! Messenger 9 Look like Yahoo! Messenger 8
For the Yahoo! Messenger user that switches from version 8 of the instant messaging application to version 9, the fact that the default manner in which Yahoo! Messenger contacts are displayed has been changed can be a source of annoyance. Instead of seeing a list of contacts that looks, well, like a list, he is welcomed by what seems to be a collection of images (Yahoo! Messenger users know what I am talking about). Yahoo! says that this new contacts list allows you to see more info related to your contacts, but the simple truth of the matter is that it just takes up more space. Instead of seeing all the contacts at once, you have to scroll up and down to see who’s online.
Here is what you can do to change this and make Yahoo! Messenger 9 look like Yahoo! Messenger 8:
Step 1. Launch Yahoo! Messenger and log into your account.
Step 2. In the upper left hand corner of the Yahoo! Messenger window click Messenger.
Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click Preferences.
Step 5. The Yahoo! Messenger Preferences window should have popped up. In the Category list select Appearance.
Step 6. In the Messenger List section click Compact view (1 line per contact; see more contacts).
Step 7. Click Apply -> click OK and you’re done.
Tips and warnings
You can skip step 3 by using this handy keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + P.
If you are still using Yahoo! Messenger versions 6.0 through 7.5 then you are very well advised to upgrade. Yahoo! as of September 2009 has dropped support for these instant messaging applications. You could install Yahoo! Messenger 9 on your machine – learn how to do this here.
