As I’ve already mentioned several times in the past, I am big supporter of the Nullsoft developed Winamp media player. In a previous article, I’ve shown you how to save playlists in Winamp – this is something that I wish I had remembered to do before performing a custom upgrade to Windows 7. Redmond-based software giant Microsoft lets its customers perform two type of upgrades:
1. In-place upgrade – all the files, folders, settings and programs are moved from your current operating system to Windows. An in-place upgrade can be performed in these instances:
Vista Home Basic -> Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Ultimate
Vista Home Premium -> Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Ultimate
Vista Business -> Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate
Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Ultimate

2. A custom upgrade – this is basically a fancy name for what is a fresh Windows 7 installation. All the data that you do not want to lose must be backed up. Windows 7 will create a Windows.old folder that contains your old Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings and Users, but don’t rely on it too much.

I performed a custom upgrade and I even went as far as to delete my old system drive before installing Windows 7 on it (this meant no Windows.old folder). What I forgot to do was save my Winamp playlist (with all the radio stations I regularly listen to – in the background, while I go about my regular routine). If I had done so, then I could easily load it now. Instead I’ll have to manually rebuild it. Without any further ado, here is what you have to do to load a playlist in Winamp (assuming of course you previously saved a playlist):

The Keyboard Shortcuts Method:

Step 1. Launch Winamp.

Step 2. Press Ctrl + O to launch the Open Playlist window.

Step 3. Locate your previously saved playlist -> press Enter or click Open.

For Winamp Classic skin users

Step 1. Launch Winamp.

Step 2. Click LIST OPTS -> select Load List

Step 3. Locate your previously saved playlist -> press Enter or click Open.

For Winamp Modern skin users

Step 1. Launch Winamp.

Step 2. Click Manage Playlist -> click Open Playlist.

Step 3. Locate your previously saved playlist -> press Enter or click Open.

Tips and warnings
  • Please note that if you delete the actual music files (mp3, mp4, and so on), the playlist is useless. The playlist is a collection of tracks, but it needs the actual music file to playback music. This does not apply to online radio stations as the playlist accesses the internet to play music.
