Now that Yahoo! has decided to officially retire Yahoo! Messenger versions 6.0 through 7.5, perhaps it would be a good idea to switch to a newer version of this very popular instant messaging (IM) app. The process of installing Yahoo! Messenger 9 on your Windows-powered computer is relatively simple. It goes something like this:

Step 1. First of all you will need to download the installer. You can grab it straight from FindMySoft here, or directly from Yahoo! here. On the web page that appears when you click one of the two links, click on Download -> save the .exe file on your computer (preferably on the desktop).

Step 2. Locate the msgr9us.exe file that you downloaded during Step 1. If you saved it on the desktop, simply minimize all open windows and applications -> double click the .exe file.

Step 3. A window called Installing Yahoo! Messenger should have appeared. In the window you have two installation options:
Typical Install: you change your browser’s homepage to Yahoo.com and you can change your default search engine to Yahoo!.
Custom Install: you can create a desktop shortcut and a Quick Launch shortcut on top of changing your browser’s homepage to Yahoo.com and your default search engine to Yahoo!.

Step 4. When you’re done with Step 3, click Next. You will be presented with the License Agreement and Terms. To move on you need to check the box next to Yes, I accept the License Agreement terms and Privacy Policy above, along with the Yahoo! Terms of Service. Click Next.

Step 5. It is now time to install the software. You need to confirm the fact that you are ready to do this by clicking Install.

Step 6. Let the installation process run its course – this may take a while, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Step 7. When presented with the Installation Complete window, click Finish. The installation window will close and Yahoo! Messenger 9 will launch automatically.

Step 8. Provide your username and password -> click Sign In. If you do not have an Yahoo! Messenger account click the Get a new Yahoo! ID link.

Tips and warnings
All the options presented in Step 3 (can create a desktop shortcut and a Quick Launch shortcut, change your browser’s homepage to Yahoo.com and your default search engine to Yahoo!) are checked by default. If you do not want to apply any of these changes, make sure to uncheck the box next to them.
Regarding Step 8 – if you have never used Yahoo! Messenger before, but you already have an Yahoo! Mail account, use your Yahoo! Mail username and password to log into Yahoo! Messenger.
You can access Yahoo! Messenger even if you do not have the software installed on your machine. As a matter of fact, there are several web-based options at you disposal. First of all there’s Yahoo! Messenger for the Web, which you can easily access from your browser (keep it open if you want to remain connected). Then there’s the built-in Yahoo! Messenger feature in Yahoo! Mail. Last but not least, Yahoo! Messenger is an integral part of the brand new Yahoo! homepage.
