Install Windows Live Essentials in Windows 7

There are two noticeable differences between the Windows Vista operating system and the Windows 7 operating system. The first difference is the fact that Windows 7 got a whole lot of positive press way before it was even launched as a final product (this happened because Windows 7 is a properly good operating system). The second difference is that that several bits and pieces that you’ve grown accustomed to use in Vista are missing from Windows 7.

This fact has been acknowledged by Bradley L. Jones, Microsoft MVP Author, Windows Live Essentials and Services: “There are some pretty important things missing in Windows 7 that were in Windows Vista. This includes things such as the Windows Mail program along with its Calendar, the Photo Gallery along with its ability to organize and fix pictures on your machine, and the Family Safety application for making your computer a little more safe for kids and others. If you were using these before, you are going to find that they are no longer a part of the Windows 7 operating system.”

The reason why these features are missing from Windows 7 is because they are web based – consequently Microsoft made them a part of Windows Live Essentials. Yes, all the bits and pieces you miss, all the bits and pieces that are not included in Windows 7 are readily available in Windows Live Essentials. The simplest way Windows Live Essentials would be to visit the official web page (link here) and download the programs you want from there. But if you already have your computer running on Windows 7, just follow the instructions presented below:

Step 1. Click the Start icon from the bottom left hand corner of the screen. If you prefer to use the keyboard instead, click the Start button (it is located in the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard; easily recognizable as it bears the Microsoft logo).

Step 2. Go to Getting Started -> click on Get Windows Live Essentials.

Step 3. You will be automatically directed to the Windows Live Essentials download page. Select the language you want to use with Windows Live Essentials -> click Download to get the Windows Live Setup executable.

Step 4. Double click the Windows Live Setup executable -> a list of programs will be displayed, choose the ones you want to install.
The programs in this list are: Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Toolbar, Family Safety, Movie Maker, Microsoft Office Live Add-in.

Step 5. When you are done selecting the programs you want to install, click the Install button at the bottom of the window.

Step 6. The installation process will begin. A progress bar keeps you informed on its, well, progress.

Step 7. When the installation process is complete you will notice that the programs you chose are displayed in the Start Menu -> Windows Live.

Tips and warnings
By removing apps like Mail, Messenger, and Photo Gallery from the Windows 7 operating system to Windows Live Essentials Microsoft is able to update and improve them without messing with the core components of the Windows OS.
