Install Firefox 3.5
On the last day of June, 2009, the Mozilla Foundation released Firefox 3.5 to the general public. It is the best Firefox version so far (see the Firefox 3.5 highlights section at the bottom, or check out this detailed article) and you are very well advised to download and install the browser on your computer. The browser works with Microsoft’s Windows, Apple’s Mac OS X and the open-source operating system Linux. Here is what you have to do to install Firefox 3.5 on a Windows-powered computer.
Step 1. You will need to get the Firefox 3.5 executable. You can get it straight from Mozilla here. Make sure select one that fits your specific needs (operating system and language).
Step 2. Save the Firefox 3.5 exe to your computer by clicking Download.
Step 3. Double click the Firefox Setup file you just downloaded.
Step 4. When the Mozilla Firefox Setup window appears, click Next.
Step 5. Select the type of installation you want to perform:
Standard
Firefox will be installed with the most common options
Custom
You may choose individual options to be installed. Recommended for experienced users.
I would advise you to go for the Custom install as it gives you more installation options.
Step 6. If you clicked on Custom install, you will now get to choose the folder where Firefox 3.5 will be installed. In the Destination Folder section click Browse, select a location to install Firefox 3.5 and then click OK.
Alternatively you can just use the default Destination Folder.
If you clicked Standard installation, move on to Step 9.
Step 7. Click Next. Select the places where Firefox shortcuts will be created: desktop icon, Start Menu Programs folder, Quick Launch bar icon.
Step 8. Click Next. Select the Start Menu folder in which you would like to create the program’s shortcuts. Click Next.
Step 9. Click Install. Let the process run its course.
Step 10. When presented with the Installation Complete window, click Finish. The installation window will close and Firefox 3.5 will launch automatically.
Tips and warnings
During Step 5, in the bottom left hand corner of the window you will notice the Use Firefox as my default web browser checkbox. If you want Firefox to be your default browser, make sure the box is checked.
Firefox 3.5 highlights:
- Support for over 70 languages.
- Private Browsing Mode to help keep your browsing habits private. This feature is affectionately called “porn mode.”
- The new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine provides better performance and enhanced stability.
- Firefox 3.5 is location aware.
- Web worker threads and native JSON support.
- The Gecko layout engine has been improved. It even includes speculative parsing for faster content rendering.
- Support for various web technologies: downloadable fonts, CSS media queries, new transformations and properties, JavaScript query selectors, HTML5 local storage and offline application storage, text, ICC profiles, and SVG transforms.
- Watch videos in the browser window with no need for external programs or plug-ins.
- Tab tearing feature: drag a tab into a new window, drag tabs between browser windows.
