Import Browser Settings to Google Chrome

If you have started to use the Google developed Chrome web browser, you do not need to start from scratch. You can import settings from the other browser(s) you’ve been using. Google Chrome will copy your browsing history, saved websites and saved passwords to make the transition as smooth as possible.

This can be done automatically when Google Chrome is installed on your system. When the Welcome to Google Chrome window appears, if you click the Customize these settings link you will notice that you can choose if you want to do the following:
- import settings from your currently installed, default browser
- create a desktop icon
- create a quick launch icon.
Leave the box next to Import settings from checked and Google Chrome will automatically import the settings from your default browser.

You can also manually import settings from other browsers into Google Chrome, so don’t sweat it if you unchecked the box next to Import settings from during the installation process. Here is what you have to do:

Step 1. Close all running browsers except for Google Chrome. If Google Chrome is not running, launch it.

Step 2. From the upper right hand corner of the Chrome window, click the wrench menu.

Step 3. A dropdown menu will appear. Click Import bookmarks and settings.

Step 4. The Import Bookmarks and Settings window will appear.
From the dropdown menu select the browser from which the settings will be imported.
From the Select items to import section make sure to check only the items you would like to import. By default, they are all selected:
  • Favorites/Bookmarks – the webpages you’ve bookmarked
  • Search engines – alternative search options saved in the browser you’re importing settings from
  • Saved passwords – the passwords the other browser has saved
  • Browsing history – all the websites you visited using the browser you’re importing settings from

Step 5. Click Import and you’re done.

Tips and warnings
  • You can replace step 3 with this: click Options -> in the Google Chrome Options window click the Personal Stuff tab -> in the Browsing data section click Import data.
