Below is a list of detailed instructions on how to send free SMS messages via Yahoo!’s instant messaging application, Yahoo! Messenger. I’ve tried to cover all the various version of Yahoo! Messenger.

Yahoo! Messenger 9 users, after launching the application and signing in, need to follow these steps:

Step 1. Select the contact you wish to send an SMS -> right click the contact

Step 2. From the menu that appears select Send SMS message

Step 3. Type in your text message and send it.
if a phone number is not stored in that contact’s details you will first be asked to provide a valid phone number -> then you can type the message and send it.

Assuming that you want to send a free SMS to someone who is not in your contacts list, you must click Actions -> from the menu select Send an SMS Message -> select Other Contact -> type in your friend’s phone number -> click OK -> type in your message and send it.

Yahoo! Messenger for Mac users need to follow the steps presented below:

Step 1. Select the contact you wish to send an SMS

Step 2. Go to the Contacts menu and select Send SMS. Or just right click that contact and select Send SMS message.

Yahoo! Messenger for the Web users need to follow the instructions below:

Step 1. In the contacts list find the Mobile Contacts group.

Step 2. Select a contact from the group and simply send an SMS.

Assuming that you want to send a free SMS to someone who is not in the Mobile Contacts group, just type the contact’s name in the Find Contacts bar -> press Enter -> a new window will appear -> type in the message and send it.
