Tabbed browsing is a feature that every modern web browser out there can offer, and the Mozilla developed Firefox browser is not different. You can open links in a new tab by clicking the middle mouse button, by holding down Ctrl then left clicking the link, or by left clicking the link and selecting Open Link in New Tab. Each time you open a new tab, it will be displayed in the tab bar (under the Bookmarks Toolbar). Now some of you might not like the fact that the tab bar is always displayed. When several tabs are open, the tab bar has to be displayed, but when only one tab is open, the bar needlessly takes up space.

By following the steps presented below you can change this default behavior in Firefox. You can hide the Tab Bar – it will remain hidden until you launch a second tab. Here is what you have to do.

Step 1. Launch the Firefox web browser.

Step 2. From the list of menus at the top, click Tools.

Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click Options (at the bottom of the list).

Step 4. In the Options window click Tabs.

Step 5. Uncheck the box next to Always show the tab bar.

Step 6. Click OK and you’re done.

Tips and warnings
  • You can also open a new tab by pressing the plus sign in the Tab Bar. Or by pressing this keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + T. If you want to check out some other Firefox keyboard shortcuts, a complete list is available here.
  • If you don’t like the fact that the Tab Bar is hidden, you could always un-hide it. Follows steps 1 through 4 in the tutorial presented above. When you get to step 5, check the box next to Always show the tab bar, then press OK.
