In the past, you could use only one image as desktop background. You could set it up so that Windows would display a picture slideshow, but not as your desktop background – as your screensaver. With the latest iteration of the Microsoft developed operating system, Windows 7, you can use a picture slideshow as your desktop background. The desktop background will change after a specific amount of time. Say for example you have a collection of 25 stunning images. With Windows 7 you can set it up so the desktop background will display those 25 pictures in turn.

Here is what you have to do turn your desktop background into a desktop slideshow:

Step 1. Minimize all open windows.

Step 2. Right click an empty space on the desktop -> from the dropdown menu that appears click Personalize.

Step 3. At the bottom of the page, click Desktop Background.

Step 4. If you have a folder containing all the pictures you would like to use, then click Browse (next to Picture location) -> select the folder. You may not want to use every picture in that folder, so hold down the Ctrl button on your keyboard -> click each picture you would like to use.

Step 5. From the dropdown menu under Change picture every select the amount of time a picture will be displayed. For example if you select 30 minutes, a picture will be displayed as your desktop background for 30 minutes; then it will be switched with another, which will also be displayed for 30 minutes. The amount of time an image will be used as your desktop background varies from 10 seconds to a full day.

Step 6 (Optional). Check the box next to Shuffle. This will mix your images so they’re not displayed in the same order they’re sorted in the source folder.

Step 7. Click Save Changes and you’re done.

Tips and warnings
  • If the instructions presented above are too much for you, here is another way to turn your desktop into a picture slideshow: go to the folder where you stored your pictures -> select the images you would like to use (hold down CTRL + click) -> right click -> select Set as desktop background.
  • To skip to the next image, right click an empty space on your desktop -> click Next desktop background.
  • If you haven’t switched to Windows 7 yet, you can user 3rd party applications to achieve the same goal (turn your desktop into a picture slideshow). You could for example use Wallpaper Slideshow LT.
