The acronym PC stands for Personal Computer – as in it is yours and no one else’s, you can customize it to fit your needs and desires. The Windows desktop on the other hand is anything but personal. I will admit that the default wallpapers that come bundled with Windows look good, but they are nothing too spectacular. If you want to make things personal, if you want a desktop image that will blow you away, then you must take things into your own hands and customize it. There are three simple means of customizing your Windows XP desktop.

The first method to enable a custom desktop background in Windows XP:

Step 1. Find an image that you think is suitable to act as a desktop background. You are well advised to pick an image that fits the desktop’s size and resolution.

Step 2. Open the image with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. In this regard you can just right click the image file -> Open With -> select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Step 3. Right click the image -> select Set as Desktop Background.

The second method to enable a custom desktop background in Windows XP:

Step 1. Find an image that you think is suitable to act as a desktop background. You are well advised to pick an image that fits the desktop’s size and resolution.

Step 2. Right click an empty space on the desktop. In the dropdown menu that appears select Properties -> click the Desktop tab.

Step 3. Click Browse -> locate the image you want to use -> select the image and click OK.

Step 4. You will see a preview of new desktop background. If you are happy with how things look then click Apply -> click OK and you’re done. If you are not happy with how things look you can only play with the position of the desktop background (tile, center, stretch) and the color of the background.

The third and simplest method to enable a custom desktop background in Windows XP:

Step 1. Find an image that you think is suitable to act as a desktop background. You are well advised to pick an image that fits the desktop’s size and resolution.

Step 2. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, right click an image -> select Set as Desktop Background.
