I find that Yahoo! instant messaging application, Yahoo! Messenger, is a properly good piece of software. With Yahoo! Messenger you can IM your friends, you can audio and video chat with other Yahoo! Messenger users, and you can even send free SMS messages (certain restrictions apply). What I don’t like is the fact that each and every time the user logs into his or her account, the Yahoo! Insider window will popup. I am not contesting the functionality that Yahoo! Insider provides, I’m just saying that it is a bit annoying to see the window popup every time – not to mention that on slower systems, the Yahoo! Messenger Insider window takes some time to load.

With a few clicks of the mouse you could easily disable the Yahoo! Messenger Insider popup window. The whole process is relatively straightforward; just follow the steps presented below.

Step 1. Launch Yahoo! Messenger and log into your account.

Step 2. From the list of menus at the top of the window, click Messenger.

Step 3. From the dropdown menu that appears, select Preferences.

Step 4. In the Yahoo! Messenger Preferences window that appears click General (left hand side).

Step 5. Under When I sign into Yahoo! Messenger uncheck the box next to Show Yahoo! Messenger Insider.

Step 6. Click Apply -> click OK and you’re done.

Tips and warnings
  • You can easily access Yahoo! Insider even if you disable the popup window. In Yahoo! Messenger 9 click Help -> Yahoo! Messenger Insider. In Yahoo! Messenger 10 you need only click the Y! Insider icon from the top right hand corner of the main Yahoo! Messenger window.
  • You can replace steps 2 and 3 from the tutorial presented above with a handy keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + P. A detailed list of all the keyboard shortcuts you can use in Yahoo! Messenger is available here.
  • Yahoo! Insider in Yahoo! Messenger 10 includes the following info: Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! news, Yahoo! Weather, and Yahoo! Search.
