Disable Win+X Keyboard Shortcuts in Vista
The Win (short for Windows) key is the one key on the keyboard with the Microsoft logo on it – most often it is pressed when you need to access the Start menu and instead of clicking the Start icon on the desktop, the user presses the Windows key on the keyboard. If you press the Win key while at the same time pressing another key, you get a handy keyboard shortcut. Like for example when you want to minimize all open windows you can just press Win + D and the desktop will be displayed. Or when you want to access Windows Explorer you just press Win + E.
Most of us find these keyboard shortcuts useful. Others do not. If you fall in the latter category, here is what you have to do to disable Win+X keyboard shortcuts in Windows Vista:
Step 1. Press the start button on your keyboard, the one with the Microsoft logo on it, or press the Vista orb icon (Start icon) from the bottom left hand corner of the screen.
Step 2. In the Start Search dialog box type in regedit -> press Enter -> access the Registry Editor.
Step 3. Find the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer
Step 4. Create a DWORD value, name it NoWinKeys. Make sure to set its value to 1 (one).
Step 5. Close the Registry Editor. Restart your machine for the change to take effect.
Tips and warnings
You can also access the Registry Editor by typing in regedit.exe in the run box.
Playing around with the Windows Registry is not a task that should be tacked by the inexperienced user. You are very well advised to stay away from any customization option that requires you to modify the registry – especially if you do not know what you are doing.
