You are very well advised to create a system restore point every time you install a new piece of software or every time you want to significantly change the way the operating system works. If anything goes wrong you can then use System Restore to, as the name so adequately points out, restore the system to a previous moment in time and thus undo any harmful changes. Consider it as taking a trip in time: if your computer used to work yesterday, System Restore will return it to the same state it was yesterday, when everything worked just fine.
Even though System Restore is a feature you would like to turn on, there will be times when you will need to turn it off. For example when the OS has been compromised and you need to run a virus or Trojan removal tool. Or when you are short on hard disk space and you need to quickly clear up some space for a short period of time. Or perhaps you don’t feel like System Restore is something you need and turning the feature off would free up some computer resources.
Here is what you have to do to disable System Restore in Windows 7:
Step 1. Minimize all open windows and running applications. Better yet, close all open windows and shut down all running applications. Right click on My Computer -> in the dropdown menu select Properties.
Step 2. In the menu that shows up click the System protection link.
Step 3. The Windows Properties window should have popped up. Locate and click the System Protection tab.
Step 4. In the Protection Settings section select a disk and click Configure (a bit further down, next to Configure restore settings, manage disk space, and delete restore points).
Step 5. If the drive you picked is C: for example, the System Protection for Local Disk (C:) window should have popped up. In the upper part of the window there’s the Restore Settings section -> click Turn off system protection.
Step 6. Click Apply, confirm your actions when the warning screen pops up and you’re done with this drive. Repeat the same process to turn off System Restore for other drives (like D: or E: or whatever other drive you may have).
Tips and warnings
If you only need to clear up some hard disk space, you can forget about disabling System Restore and use another feature: adjust the amount of disk space System Restore uses. In the System Protection for Local Disk (C:) window (step 5) there’s a Disk Space Usage section -> move the slider to adjust the amount of disk space System Restore uses -> click Apply. It might be a good idea to create a system restore point after you do this (the operating system will delete older restore points so that it can use as little disk space as possible).
