Disable Sound Notifications in Yahoo! Messenger

From a functionality point of view, sound notifications in Yahoo’1 instant messaging app, the aptly named Yahoo! Messenger, are great. You are acoustically informed when a contact goes online, when a contact goes offline, when a contact sends you a message, when you receive a message in Yahoo! Mail, when a contact buzzes you, and the list goes on and on. Sure, it is great functionality, but it can get tiresome at times. I’m sure you don’t want to hear a sound every time someone goes online/offline and I’m definitely sure you don’t want someone buzzing you in the middle of the night.

Here is what you have to do to disable sound notifications in Yahoo! Messenger:

Step 1. Launch Yahoo! and log into your account.

Step 2. In the upper left hand corner of the Yahoo! Messenger window click Messenger.

Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click Preferences.

Step 4. From the list of categories select Alerts and Sounds.

Step 5. To turn off all sound notifications uncheck the box next to Enable alert sounds. If you just want to turn off some sound notification, leave the box next to Enable alert sounds checked. In the Alert me when section you have the following options
A Messenger contact goes online
A Messenger contact goes offline
I receive an Instant Message or SMS Message
I receive a personals alert
I receive a message in Yahoo! Mail
I receive a Yahoo! Calendar reminder
I receive an incoming voice call

Click I receive a message in Yahoo! Mail for example. In the Alert me by: section uncheck the box next to Playing a sound. Do the same for all the other options in the list above.

Step 6. Click Apply -> click OK and you’re done.

Tips and warnings:

You can skip step 2 by using a simple keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + P.
To mute Audibles: when you receive/send an audible, left click the audible in the conversation window -> select Mute.
