No matter what Windows version you use, be it XP, Vista or Windows 7, when you install new programs, they will be highlighted. Just press the Start button and see that newly installed programs are highlighted – or just check out the image at the bottom.

You could disable this default behavior in windows. All you have to do is follow the instructions presented below.

Step 1. Right click the Taskbar or right click the Start button from the bottom left hand side of the screen -> select Properties.
Alternatively you can just click an empty space in the Start menu, then select Properties.

Step 2. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window click the Start menu tab.

Step 3. Click Customize.

Step 4. In the Customize Start Menu window that pops up click the Advanced tab.

Step 5. Uncheck the box next to Highlight newly installed programs.

Step 6. Click OK to close the Customize Start Menu window -> click OK to close the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window.

Tips and warnings
  • Please note that the above instructions work for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • To undo the changes presented above, simply check the box next to Highlight newly installed programs (step 5).
  • This Windows tweak is meant for advanced users. Novice users should not disable new programs highlighting as it will let them easily identify newly installed software applications.
  • Windows 7 is the Microsoft developed operating system that will wash away the disappointment brought on by Vista. As you may very well know, many users decided to stick with XP and not switch to Vista. Windows 7 is the operating system that will push these users to give up on XP (as a little side note, XP was launched back in 2001). Did you know that Windows 7 has an XP Mode feature?
