Disable JavaScript in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat
Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat, while useful software applications, tend to be plagued by security problems. Just this week the California-based company that specializes in creating multimedia and creativity software products announced that Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat 9.2 is plagued by a previously unknown, critical security vulnerability; the company also announced that the vulnerability is being exploited in the wild.
To keep your system protected, you can either patch Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat (but in this case a patch will be released on January 12th) or you can disable JavaScript. Here is what you have to do to disable JavaScript in Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader:
Step 1. The first and obvious step is to launch Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. JavaScript has to be disabled from within the software application, so launch it.
Step 2. From the list of menus in the top left hand corner of the Adobe Reader/Acrobat window, click Edit.
Step 3. From the dropdown menu that appears select Preferences.
Step 4. The Preferences window will appear. From the left hand side, under Categories, click JavaScript.
Step 5. Uncheck the box next to Enable Acrobat JavaScript.
Step 6. Click OK and you’re done.

- Here are more details about the vulnerability that plagues Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.2, as provided by Adobe: “Adobe has confirmed a critical vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.2 and earlier versions that could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. There are reports that this vulnerability is being actively exploited in the wild. Adobe categorizes this as a critical issue. Adobe actively shares information about this and other vulnerabilities with partners in the security community to enable them to quickly develop detection and quarantine methods to protect users until a patch is available. Adobe recommends that you keep your anti-malware software and definitions up-to-date and monitor releases from your vendor about this issue.”
