Disable Automatic Update in Firefox
Did you ever log into your computer only to find out that it is working a bit sluggishly? Usually this happens when a process is running in the background without you noticing it – when the background process is complete, you computer will return to normal. The same can be said about the Mozilla developed Firefox browser. In some occasions it will act a bit sluggish because something is running in the background – the browser is automatically updating itself.
Firefox by default checks for any available updates and it if detects any it proceeds to downloading them. You will realize this when you launch Firefox and are greeted with a message that says Firefox will be started after the updates are installed.
You could disable the automatic update feature in Firefox if you want to. Here is what you have to do:
Step 1. Launch the Firefox browser.
Step 2. In the upper left hand corner of the screen click the menu that says Tools.
Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click the last item at the bottom, the one that says Options....
Step 4.The Options window will pop up. Click the last tab to the right, the one that says Advanced (has a gear-like icon).
Step 5. Click the Update tab.
Step 6. Under Automatically check for updates to: uncheck the box next to Firefox -> Click OK and you’re done.
Tips and warnings
You can undo this by simply checking the box next to Firefox (step 6).
The fact that Firefox automatically updates itself is a security feature. This way Mozilla makes sure Firefox users apply patches and fixes for various issues as soon as a patch/fix is released. If you disable the automatic update feature, make sure to manually check for updates. Click Help -> Check for Updates. This also implies that you keep up-to-date with the Firefox news and apply the update as soon as it is released. Using an upatched browser means you are needlessly exposing yourself to threats; but then on the other hand there are still some people that use Firefox 2.X which is no longer supported (no updates, no patches, no phishing support).
