In a previous article, mainly this one, we’ve shown you how to increase the size of a partition in Windows 7, with no need for any 3rd party software applications. Now we take a look at how to decrease the size of a partition/drive in Windows 7. That’s the great thing about this version of the Windows-based operating system: you do not need to download and install 3rd party apps to perform certain tasks. For example you do not need to download 3rd party applications to manage your partitions, nor do you need to download 3rd party apps to burn data onto CDs and/or DVDs.

Without any further ado, here is what you have to do to decrease the size of a partition in Windows 7:

Step 1. Click the Start icon from the bottom left hand corner of the screen or press the Windows key on your keyboard.

Step 2. In the Start menu click Control Panel

Step 3. In the Control Panel window click System and Security.

Step 4. Click Administrative Tools.

Step 5. In the window that appears -> select Computer Management.

Step 6. Now select the Disk Management option.

Step 7. Select the drive or partition whose size you would like to decrease. Right click the drive/partition and select Shrink Volume.

Step 8. For the size of the volume to be decreased, Windows 7 must assess the amount of available free disk space. The window Querying Shrink Space will appear -> wait for the process to complete.

Step 9. The amount of available disk space will be displayed. You can decrease the size of the partition by that much. For example if there are 30GB of free space, you can shrink the drive/partition by 30GB.
Enter the amount of space to shrink and click Shrink.

Step 10. After the shrinking process is done, you will notice a new volume in Disk Management. With the example presented above in mind, the new volume represents the 30GB of free space. You can prepare this volume for usage by right clicking the volume -> select New Simple Volume -> go through the steps presented in the New Simple Volume Wizard.
