Below is a detailed, step-by-step tutorial that will explain how to create a HomeGroup in Windows 7, the latest version of the Microsoft developed operating system. A HomeGroup encompasses a group of Windows 7-powered computers linked together over a home network. These computers can share files, folders and printers amongst each other.

Here is what you have to do to create a HomeGroup in Windows 7:

Step 1. Minimize all open windows. Better yet, close everything.

Step 2. Click the Start button, the Windows orb from the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Alternatively you could just press the Windows key on your keyboard (the one with the Microsoft logo on it).

Step 3. Click Control Panel from the Start Menu.

Step 4. In the search box type in homegroup -> now click HomeGroup.

Step 5. The Share with other home computers running Windows 7 window will appear. In the bottom right hand side of the window there’s a tab called Create a homegroup. Click it.

Step 6. You must now select the files you would like to share with other Windows 7 users on the HomeGroup. The boxes next to Pictures, Music, Videos and Printers are checked by default. You could also check the box next to Documents if you want to.
Now click Next.

Step 7. A password will be displayed. You should write it down as this is the password other Windows 7 users will need to provide if they want to join the HomeGroup.
Don’t worry if you forget to write the password down. You can always view it later on.

Step 8. Click Finish and you’re done. Other Windows 7-powered PCs can now join the HomeGroup you’ve created.

Tips and warnings
  • Please note that Windows 7 Starter and Windows 7 Home Basic users cannot create a HomeGroup; they can only join one.
