If you want access to the multitude of services that Google provides, like Gmail, Google Reader, Google Calendar, Picasa, Google Docs and so on, you need to set up a Google Account. Only after you go through this process will you be able to access the aforementioned online services. The process is a fairly simple as you will see from the step-by-step guide below. All you need is a valid email address and you can get going.

Step 1. Go to Google Accounts. On the webpage click on Create an account now.

Step 2. Provide all the required info. Things like first and last name, desired login name, password, and so on.

In the Word Verification section you need to type in the characters you see in the image (CAPTCHA).

When you are done providing all the required info, click the I accept. Create my account tab at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3. You will be directed to a webpage where you are congratulated for creating a new Google Account: “Welcome to Google Accounts! Your account username is USERNAME. In order to verify that the email address associated with your account is correct, we've sent an email to EMAIL ADDRESS. Please make sure you click the link provided in the email,” says the message.

Tips and warnings
  • To set up a Google Account you need a valid email address. If you do not have one, you can easily create a Gmail account (see here). The great thing is that if you create a Gmail account, you can use that username and password to access other Google services. That will basically be your Google Account.
  • Here is the full list of services you can access with your Google account: Web History (the queries you enter in Google Search are stored in your account), AdWords, Blogger, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Checkout, Google Code, Google Docs, Google Finance, Google Groups, Google Health, Google Maps, Google News, Google Reader, Google Sites, Google Talk, iGoogle, Orkut, Picasa, YouTube.
