The IT savvy computer user does not need o know how to set up an email account – as a matter of fact, they probably have already created at least two email accounts (one they use for work, one for personal reasons). The less IT oriented user on the other hand is pretty much clueless. You wouldn’t believe how many people call me up and ask me to create an email account for them – or at least them guide them step by step. So I decided to put together a step-by-step guide on how to create an email account with Google’s Gmail.

Here is what you have to do to create a new Gmail account:

Step 1. Go to Gmail. On the webpage click on Create Account.

Step 2. Provide all the required info. Things like first and last name, desired login name, password, a security question, and so on.

In the Word Verification section you need to type in the characters you see in the image (CAPTCHA).

When you are done providing all the required info, click the I accept. Create my account tab at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3. You will be directed to a webpage where you are congratulated for creating a new Gmail account. Just click Show me my account and you will be taken to your Gmail account. That’s it, you can now receive and send out emails from your newly created Gmail account.

Tips and warnings
Keep in mind that if you do not access your Gmail account for six months it will be labeled as dormant (relax, you can still receive emails). If you do not log into your Gmail account within three months after said account has been labeled as dormant, it will be deactivated. In layman’s terms, if you do not access your Gmail account for 9 months it will be deactivated and Google may delete it.
You can use your Gmail login credentials to log into other Google services. For example if you log into Google.com, you can simply click the Gmail tab at the top and you will be taken to your inbox.
You can select a new skin for Gmail. Just click Settings -> Themes -> click a theme -> enter your location -> click Save.
You can extend Gmail’s functionality by enabling one of the many offerings in Gmail Labs. Click Settings -> Labs -> select an item -> click Enable -> click Save Changes (bottom of the page).
