Create System Repair Disk in Windows 7

Windows 7 is the latest and so far best Microsoft-developed operating system ever. The list of features available in Windows 7 that are not available in XP and Vista is quite long. Here are the Windows 7 features that are not available in XP and Vista: Libraries, Search Federation, Enterprise Search Scopes, DirectAccess, VPN reconnect, BranchCache, Mobile Broadband, RemoteApp & Desktop Connections, BitLocker to Go, AppLocker, Multiple Active Firewall Profiles, Domain Name System Security Extensions, Biometric Support, Windows PowerShell 2.0, Scripting of Group Policy Settings, Group Policy Preferences, Windows Troubleshooting Platform, Problem Steps Recorder, Remote Access to Reliability Data, Dynamic Driver Provisioning, Multicast Multiple Stream Transfer, VHD Image Management & Deployment, Rich Remoting Experience (Multimedia, Bi-directional Audio, Multi-monitor), VHD Boot.

Just because Windows 7 is better than Vista and XP does not mean it is failsafe. Something could always go wrong. Two scenarios immediately come to mind: the system could become compromised or the hard drive could crash. You need to prepare for a data disaster situation and this is where System Repair Disc comes in. With it you can create a system image and boot from that system image should the unthinkable ever happen.

Here is how you can use System Repair Disc in Windows 7:

Step 1. Press the Start button on your keyboard (the one that bears the Microsoft logo) or click the Start button from the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

Step 2. In the search box type in System Repair.

Step 3. Select Create a System Repair disk

Step 4. Take a blank DVD and put in the burning drive (DVD writer). You could also use a CD, just make sure it is large enough to store the System Repair Disc.

Step 5. Select the burning drive from the dropdown menu.

Step 6. Click Create disc. Wait for the burn process to complete.

Tips and warnings
  • Here is how you can replace steps 1, 2 and 3 in the tutorial presented above: Start -> All Programs -> Maintenance -> Create a System Repair Disc.
  • If you have a Windows 7 DVD you can use that to boot to the Windows Recovery Environment. If you bough a PC with Windows 7 preinstalled (OEM license) then you do not have a DVD. Use System Repair Disc to create a system image -> use the disc when something goes wrong and you cannot boot Windows 7.
  • Be careful where you store the System Repair Disc. Keep it somewhere safe, but not so safe that you forget where you put it.
