As I’ve previously mentioned in the other two tutorials posted today – mainly the How to install Winamp and How to Minimize Winamp to the System Tray – my media player of choice is Winamp. Sure, there are other players out there, like Apple’s iTunes for example, but I just want something I am familiar with (and Winamp has been around for ages) and something that can play music while running in the background. Since Winamp usually hides in the background, I rarely bring it forth to play with it (read change the music track or radio station, turn down he volume, so on). But when I do bring it forth, I want to see something nice – and this is where Winamp skins come in.
By default Winamp comes with two choices of skins: Modern and Classic. Here is what you have to do to switch between these skins:
Step 1. Launch the media player. Might sound like an obvious step to many, but I’m covering all the bases here, the experienced computer user as well as the green, novice user.
Step 2. If you have enabled the Modern Skin then click Options -> Skins -> click Winamp Classic. Alternatively you can click the Options tab -> in the dropdown menu that appears select Preferences -> go to Skins -< in the menu to the right select Winamp Classic.
Step 2*. If you have the Classic skin enabled right click the main Winamp window -> in the dropdown menu that appears go to Skins -> select Winamp Modern.
If the default skins are not to your liking, there are numerous other skins that you can try out. Here is what you have to do:
Step 1. Launch the Winamp media player. Again, covering all the bases here.
Step 2. Classic skin users must right click right click the main Winamp window -> in the dropdown menu that appears go to Skins -> click Get more skins. Modern skin users must click Options -> Skins -> Get more skins.
Step 3. Your default web browser will be launched and you will be directed to the official Winamp web page. Download a skin you like from the webpage and save it to your computer (preferably the desktop).
Step 4. Double click the downloaded Winamp skin. Confirm the fact that you want to install it by clicking Yes when presented with the Are you sure that you want to install this Winamp Skin? message.
Step 5. Delete the Winamp skin setup executable from your desktop.
