Change Font Color for Online Contacts in Yahoo! Messenger

In a previous article I’ve shown you how to get Yahoo!’s instant messaging application, Yahoo! Messenger, to display online contacts with bold letters – while offline contacts were listed with regular characters. That is a nice way to differentiate online and offline contacts. But there is something even better you can do: you can set it up so that Yahoo! Messenger displays online contacts with differently colored fonts than offline contacts.

Here is what you have to do to change the font color and format for online contacts in Yahoo! Messenger:

Step 1. The first and obvious step is to launch Yahoo! Messenger. Once the application is up and running, user your login credentials to sign in.

Step 2. Look to the upper left hand side of the Yahoo! Messenger window, locate and click the Messenger button.

Step 3. From the dropdown menu that appears select Preferences. The Yahoo! Messenger Preferences window will appear.

Step 4. Under Category, click Appearance (left hand side).

Step 5. Now look to the right. Click the button next to Font and color for online contacts.

Step 6. The Messenger list style window will appear. Select the font color that you would like Yahoo! Messenger to use to display online contacts. When you’re done click OK.

Step 7. In the Yahoo! Messenger Preferences window click OK and you’re done.

Tips and warnings
  • You can toggle offline contacts visibility with a simple keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + H. Press Ctrl + H once and all offline contacts will be hidden out of view; press it again and all offline contacts will once again be displayed.
  • You can toggle offline contacts visibility by using the mouse: click Messenger -> Contacts -> Show/Hide -> select Offline Contacts.
