Automatically Start Firefox in Private Mode

As long as you have a computer and an internet connection you can easily access the wealth of information that is readily available online. Almost slipped my mind – you are also going to need a properly good web browser, something like Mozilla’s Firefox. Even though you want to access all sorts of info from the web does not mean you want to everyone else to know what that info is. And here is where Private Browsing and Clear Recent History come in. Both are features meant to address the users privacy by deleting all traces of his browsing activity.

If you would like to clear all info about the last hour’s worth of web browsing, a detailed tutorial on this topic is available here. If you want to enable Private Browsing mode, we’ve already covered this topic in the tutorial entitled How To Use Private Browsing in Firefox 3.5. It just occurred to me that some Firefox users might want to automatically enable Private Mode every time they start up the browser. So I came up with this handy tutorial:

Step 1. The first thing you need to do is launch the web browser.

Step 2. In the upper part of the Firefox window there’s a list of menus -> click Tools.

Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click Options (it’s the last menu at the bottom).

Step 4. The Options window should have popped up. From the list of tabs at the top, click the one that says Privacy (has some sort of mask icon).

Step 5. In the History section check the box next to Automatically start Firefox in a Private Browsing session.

Step 6. Click OK and you’re done. The next time you fire up the Firefox browser (pun was intentional) your session will start in Private Browsing mode.

Tips and warnings

Keep in mind that while in Private Mode the browser will forget the following: browser history, search history, download history, web form history, cookies, or temporary internet files. Bookmarks and files you downloaded yourself will be saved.
You can undo this change by simply unchecking the box next to Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session.
