I imagine at least a couple of situations where I would like the PC to shutdown automatically. Here’s the first scenario I had in mind: I put on some soothing music, get in bead and try to fall asleep. The music will aid me in falling asleep, but once I do so, I would like the music to be turned off –and this is where automatically shutting down the PC comes in. Here is the second scenario I had in mind: I start some process that takes a long time; I know how long the process takes to complete, but there is no option to turn off the computer when the process ends. This is where automatically shutting down the PC comes in again.

With a free piece of software such as SmartSleep you can instruct your computer to shutdown at a specific time (for example at 01.30PM) or after a specific amount of time (after half an hour or an hour for example). Here is what you have to do:

Step 1. Click here (a new tab will open) -> click Download and, well, download SmartSleep to your computer. Wait for the download process to complete.

Step 2. Double click the SmartSleep .exe file you downloaded during step 1. The setup wizard will appear -> follow the instructions provided by the wizard to install SmartSleep on your system.

Step 3. Once the application has been installed, launch SmartSleep.
To shutdown your computer after a specified amount of time, click Timer from the left hand side of the window -> under Action Time select the amount of time -> under Action select Shutdown -> then under Countdown select Start.
To schedule a task click Schedule -> click Add New.

Tips and warnings
  • Please note that SmartSleep’s functionality is not limited to just shutting down your computer. The software also supports reboot, hibernate, log off, and so on. You can check out a SmartSleep review here.
