Automatically Clear History in Firefox
With Firefox 3.5 the Mozilla Foundation is taking privacy very seriously. Proof of the fact that they want to address the needs of the Firefox user out there is the fact that version 3.5 of the web browser comes with a Private Browsing feature, affectionately called “p*rn mode”. While Private Browsing mode is enabled , the browser will not store any of this data: browser history, search history, download history, web form history, cookies, or temporary internet files. And for the times you forget to enable Private Browsing, Mozilla has also fitted the browser with the option to clear recent history – forget everything for the past 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, the entire day.
Some of us take privacy so seriously that we would like to permanently delete the browser history. And since going through the clear history process each and every time we use the browser is a pain, we would rather have the browser do this automatically.
Here is what you have to do to get the Firefox browser to automatically clear history:
Step 1. You will need to launch the Firefox browser.
Step 2. In the upper part of the Firefox window there’s a list of menus -> click Tools.
Step 3. In the dropdown menu that appears click Options (it’s the last menu at the bottom).
Step 4. The Options window should have popped up. From the list of tabs at the top, click the one that says Privacy (has some sort of mask icon).
Step 5. In the History section, way down at the bottom there’s an option called Clear history when Firefox closes. Check the box next to it.
Step 6. The Settings option next to Clear history when Firefox closes can now be accessed -> click it. In the Settings for Clearing History window that pops up you can select all the data that will be cleared when you close Firefox – things like browsing history, download history, cookies, saved passwords and so on. Check the box next to each item you would like to be removed when Firefox closes. Click Ok when you’re done.
Step 6. In the Options window click OK and you’re done.
Tips and warnings
You could use this alternative: automatically start Firefox in Private Mode.
